#1 Cloud Kingdom LE (8.34%)

Regarded by many to be the greatest map in StarCraft II history, it should come as no surprise that the map receiving the most votes is Cloud Kingdom LE. Released in 2011, Cloud Kingdom not only won the first Team Liquid Map Contest, but also became the first non-Korean map to enter a Korean Starleague when it was featured in 2012 GSL Season 1. Eventually added to the StarCraft II ladder map pool in early 2012, the map stayed on the ladder for 11 seasons, giving it one of the longest runs in ladder history.

Notable Games
Lucifron vs Stephano  - WCS Europe (2012)
Grubby vs Nerchio  - WCS Europe (2012)
Life vs Leenock – MLG Fall Championship Finals (2012)

#2 Metalopolis (8.14%)

Created by
Blizzard Entertainment

One of the original ladder maps from Wings of Liberty Beta, Metalopolis has a reputation for being one of the most balanced maps of its time. It enjoyed a seven season run in competitive play and was host to numerous classic matches. Beyond the memorable matches, this map has also seen the birth of many interesting strategies. Floating a Command Center to a High Yield base? Metalopolis did it first. Having now been absent from the ladder for over two years, Metalopolis will make its triumphant return in the upcoming 2014 Season 4 map pool.

Notable Games
Boxer vs Rain – MLG Anaheim (2011)
Stephano vs Polt – ASUS ROG Winter (2012)
MMA vs DongRaeGu – GSTL Finals (2011)

#3 Daybreak LE (7.79%)

Created by
WinparkPrime

In 2012, the inclusion of Daybreak as a ladder map was met with considerable praise. Widely regarded as one of the most balanced maps of all-time, Daybreak LE remained on the ladder for an astounding 11 seasons. As the only map ever to be present in a full ladder season for both Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm, this map rests in a tier of its own in terms of both quality and legacy.

Notable Games
Jjakji vs Leenock – GSL November (2011)
PartinG vs Flash – WCS KR Season 1 (2013)
Taeja vs Fantasy – WCS KR Season 1 (2013)

#4 Ohana LE (7.69%)

Created by
IronManSC

Joining the ladder map pool in 2012, Ohana LE is one of the most unforgettable maps in StarCraft II history, and not only because Ohana means “family”. The map aged like a fine wine, with notes of Creep-spread, Marine-Tank standoffs, proxy structures, and unique two-base all-ins developing as the seasons passed. The map also features two of the most powerful Xel’Naga Watchtowers of any ladder map, so expect them to be hotly contested in a majority of your games.

Notable Games
Sen vs Zenio – NASL Season 3 (2012)
Nerchio vs Yonghwa – HomeStoryCup V (2012)
Suhosin vs MarineKing – GSL Season 3 (2012)

#5 Shakuras Plateau (7.21%)

Created by
Blizzard Entertainment

In 2010, StarCraft II Wings of Liberty was largely a game of timing attacks and armies clashing en-masse. It was then that Shakuras Plateau arrived, a map with a narrow center pathway that was easily defendable.  The split-map scenarios that ensued allowed players to focus on their drop and harass play instead of what their three-base push was going to look like. Now, in 2014, expect players to be able to harass like never before and for that third base to be awfully tough to take.

Notable Games
MMA vs DRG – GSL Blizzard Cup (2011)
MVP vs Nestea – BlizzCon Finals (2011)
San vs Nestea – GSL (2011)

#6 Akilon Wastes (6.77%)

Created by
Blizzard Entertainment

A modified version of the Wings of Liberty map, Akilon Flats, Akilon Wastes has produced some of the most epic matches in Heart of the Swarm. With extremely defendable expansions and a reasonable rush distance, the map offers a wide variety of strategies and game styles. Additionally, late-game bases can be extremely challenging to hold as armies rotate around the map. Very few maps reward a competent multi-tasker quite like Akilon Wastes.

Notable Games
MVP vs Innovation – WCS Season 1 Finals (2013)
Polt vs Hyun – MLG Spring Championship (2013)
Jaedong vs Dear – BlizzCon Global Finals (2013)

#7 Xel'Naga Caverns (6.49%)

Created by
Blizzard Entertainment

As one of the earliest maps to win the hearts of StarCraft II players around the world, Xel’Naga Caverns will undoubtedly be one of the most interesting maps to make its return in Season 4. The map has a number of notable features centered on aggression. If you’re ready for nonstop action and some quicker games, then you’re ready for Xel’Naga Caverns.

Notable Games
TLO vs Hyperdub – GSL Season 1 (2010)
Line vs TOP – GSL Super Tournament (2011)
