Meet the Teams: G2 Esports

Over the summer, you got to meet Red Reserve, Intrepid Fox, and Team Genji. For our first fall entry in Meet the Teams, we’re excited to introduce the well-known and tremendously talented G2 Esports, new to Pro Team Standings in Season 3.

Three Tremendous Talents

If star power is your thing, G2 is one of the rosters to watch this season. They currently sport three incredible players with a ton of top-tier finishes to their names:

  • Thijs "Thijs" Molendijk
  • Dima “Rdu" Radu
  • Yevhenii “Neirea" Shumilin

While these three players accumulated 113 combined Hearthstone Competitive Points (CP) in Season 2—just shy of breaking into the top 10 leaderboard had they been competing last season—they’re some of the best in Europe, and not a team to count out at any stage in Season 3.

“We practice very efficiently,” says Thijs. “I think it really helps a lot when you have teammates that you think are on the top of the game.” All three members of this roster have been competing actively since Hearthstone’s beta, and both Thijs and Neirea made the World Championship in 2015.

As a team, they work well together, but may not practice as hard as a group as they could. “We put out some of the best practice and discussions and come up with the best deck lists,” Rdu says. “But we need to learn how to better communicate in the game.” Neirea agrees: “We don’t really practice as a team.”

The group feels that they’re probably not going to contend for the very top of the Pro Team Standings leaderboard, but that they’re still a force to be reckoned with elsewhere. “In Playoffs—where we fully prepare—they should fear us,” Rdu says.

Looking at the competitive field, Thijs points to F2K and Tempo Storm as the teams to watch. “It’s probably not our competition, in a way,” says Neirea. “They’ll be way ahead of us. There are teams like complexity, Omnislash, etc. that we should aim for.” RDU adds that as a group, they really focus on preparing for Playoffs.

Particularly for this roster, the balance of competing and creating content looks daunting. In discussing the challenges of focusing on tournaments while still trying to stream actively, each team member had a bit of a different perspective. “I look a month ahead at most,” Thijs says. “I decide which tournaments work for me and fit that around still streaming consistently.” For Rdu, he tries to pick the most interesting tournaments, but likes to stay sharp regardless. “I’ll compete in something just to stay in shape,” he says. “I don’t want to miss any Playoffs, because going to the World Championship is the most important thing to me.” Overall, everyone agrees that they’d rather attend fewer tournaments that they’re well-prepared for.

Thanks to G2 Esports for taking the time to sit down with us! We’re especially excited to see what this epic roster can do in Season 3. All three of these guys are household names in competitive Hearthstone, so you can bet they’ll be around in future HCT events.

Do you think G2 could upset the likes of Tempo Storm, F2K, or Nordavind? Which of these players is your favorite to cheer for or watch on stream? Let us know in the comments!
