HGC Crowns a Champion at BlizzCon 2018

HGC Crowns a Champion at BlizzCon 2018

A rematch five months in the making, Dignitas and Gen.G met in the Grand Finals on Saturday evening in front of thousands of cheering fans at the Anaheim Convention Center. In June, at the Mid-Season Brawl in Jönköping, Gen.G escaped with a tight 4-3 series win over Dignitas. After each team tore through the competition at the Western and Eastern Clashes, it was almost as if they were destined to square off on the big stage for the HGC Finals.

Yet there were setbacks in the semis, as Team Liquid nearly toppled Gen.G, with the full five games required to determine a winner. Dignitas lost their initial game to Miracle, but fought back and rode a wave of crowd excitement to earn their spot at the end of the bracket.

That momentum was halted in the Grand Finals, as Gen.G capitalized on Dignitas’ missteps and applied constant pressure against Europe’s best. The series concluded with a stunning 3% Core defense by Gen.G, opening up a route to strike back and take home the trophy.

Following his team’s win, Gen.G’s Support player Lee "Sake” Jung-Hyuk expressed disbelief at their back-to-back championships. “We were so happy after we won BlizzCon the first time,” he said. “But now that we won again, we are happier than last year.”

This historic victory further cements a memorable legacy for these players. But for every peak accomplishment, another arises—and Gen.G is no different, looking forward to their future. “Our next goal is to win BlizzCon again next year and set a record no one can break,” Sake said.

Congratulations Gen.G!
