Will Korea Win the HGC Finals?

Will Korea Win the HGC Finals?

There are some truly epic matchups on the schedule page as of today. While every team has a shot at pulling off an upset, there are some particularly serious series on the docket between Korea and Europe that promise to deliver. These two regions have distinguished themselves from the rest, with representatives from both in the grand finals of every major event in 2018.

Assuming history repeats itself, these are the matches you should keep an eye out for during BlizzCon Opening Week.

Team Liquid vs. Miracle – Thursday, October 25 at 10:15 a.m. PT / 7:15 p.m. CEST

Team Liquid will have an opportunity to prove themselves against the third seed from Korea on the first day of Opening Week. A win here could do wonders for Team Liquid’s mentality moving forward, and would send a message to the rest of their opponents in Group A.

The power level of Miracle is a mystery currently, as they have yet to appear at an international event. Tempo Storm, who will face Miracle two days later, will be watching this match intently to understand how Miracle approaches the Western teams in terms of playstyle and draft.

Leftovers vs. Tempest – Friday, October 26 at 1:00 p.m. PT / 10:00 p.m. CEST

The Leftovers, who already will have played against Team Dignitas and HeroesHearth by the time they are tasked with taking down Tempest, should be nice and warmed up for their first encounter with Korea. For Tempest—who should in theory move past both Mindfreak and TheOne in their first two series of the tournament—the Leftovers will be the first true test.

Expect for Leftovers to ban out Dragon Shire here, as they currently have a 0-5 record on the Battleground in Phase 2, in stark contrast to Tempest’s 9-1.

Dignitas vs. Tempest – Saturday, October 27 at 1:00 p.m. PT / 10:00 p.m. CEST

The last time these two titans met was at the Mid-Season Brawl, where Tempest 2-0’d Team Dignitas, before Team Dignitas struck back 3-1 in the playoffs. Whichever way this two-game series goes, many are anticipating that these two teams will claim the top spots in Group B by the end of Opening Week.

Gen.G vs. Miracle – Sunday, October 28 at 1:00 p.m. PT / 10:00 p.m. CEST

The final match of the group stage is one worth sticking around for. This would typically be an open-and-shut case in favor of Gen.G, who have been putting on a clinic in league play this year. But Miracle are one of the few teams in the world who have been able to cut down Gen.G in a best-of-five. They’ve won this head-to-head twice now, both in Week 4 and Week 8. Will their win streak against the reigning World Champions continue?
