StarCraft Remastered

Unit Spotlight: Zerg

Blizzard Entertainment

The Zerg are innumerable, merciless, and free of fear. A tide of teeth and spines, they pour across the universe, devouring everything in their path. In StarCraft: Remastered, view the galaxy’s most ferocious creatures in spitting, slavering HD.

Today we’re spotlighting several units in the Zerg arsenal, and providing tips on how to deploy them to their greatest potential.

Hold a Ramp with Lurkers

The high ground in StarCraft is powerful, and no Zerg unit is better at taking advantage of it than the Lurker. Just a few Lurkers can hold a ramp against much larger ground forces — though when long range units like Siege Tanks appear, a scuttling retreat may become necessary.

Break a Siege Tank Line with Overlord Drops

Hardly anything is more intimidating than a fortified position of Siege Tanks. Though a heroic Zerg player may be tempted to try a frontal assault, this approach carries grave risks. Observe as a Zerg army attempts to break a line of tanks:

Instead of attacking head-on, try dropping units on top of the tanks with Overlords. When the situation above is played out with drops instead of a headlong charge, the results are much different:

Stack Mutalisks Like a Professional

Stacking Mutalisks improves their ability to pick off targets quickly, while simultaneously making them harder to target for Marines and other single-target units. To trick Mutalisks into stacking tightly, include an Overlord in their control group.

But be careful — against units with Area of Effect (AoE) damage, such as Archons, stacking up is a recipe for losing all your Mutalisks in a single gruesome cloudburst!

Abuse Mobility

With units like Zerglings and Mutalisks, plus Overlord drops and Nydus canals, Zerg forces are incredibly mobile. Use that mobility to expand all over the map and crash down on opponents from all sides. If you play your cards right, it should seem to your enemy that the Swarm is endless and everywhere.

Learn From the Best

Watch AfreecaTV StarLeague (ASL) Season 3 finalist Lee ‘Shine’ Young Han put all the pieces together in his epic series vs. Yoon ‘Mong’ Chan. Shine is notorious for creativity and aggression — traits that any aspiring Zerg player should seek to emulate!
